HENNA TATTOO SHAPES

Five base figures make up the more common elements of Mehndi-inspired henna tattoo designs:

•Circle

•Petal

•Leaf, or Spire

•Curlicue, or Question Mark

•Straight Line

The best way to practice is on a piece of paper. Let’s start with the circle.

First, draw a basic circle on a piece of paper with a pen and clip your cone to a fine point (see Clipping the Cone on page 21). Then, using the henna cone, make the same circle over and over again on the paper. You will soon become comfortable with the henna cone and the amount of pressure to apply. This repetition is how you train the muscles in your hand to do what you want.

Practice each of the five strokes on a piece of paper until you can make them consistently. If you master these strokes individually, you will do just fine making some very beautiful henna tattoos.

Enough reading, right? Are you making those shapes in good, consistent fashion? Then let’s get going on the tattoo practice part.
